Since 2006, the B.C. Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA) has undertaken a province-wide communications campaign to encourage the responsible recycling of used oil materials. Each summer, two ambassadors have embarked on a tour of the province in a branded vehicle promoting the message to key stakeholders and members of the public that “a single drop of used oil can contaminate one million drops of clean water”. Over a 17-week period the ambassadors visit collection facilities, distribute information, conduct media interviews, meet with program stakeholders and attend events on behalf of BCUOMA, as well as program partners Post-Consumer Pharmaceutical Stewardship Association (PCPSA), Product Care and the Electronic Stewardship Association of British Columbia (ESABC).
Due to the success of the BCUOMA program, B.C. now has one of the highest recovery rates in the country. Not only has the association been able to connect with more program stakeholders and residents of B.C., but the program has also encouraged fellow industry associations to get involved.
